I love toffee apples! Who doesn’t? Don’t forget apples are an excellent source of antioxidants and made the top 20 foods with the highest antioxidants. Thanks to the skin of this perfect fruit. 🙂
These are much better for you than what you will find out there. Don’t get me wrong, I love those Carmel apples from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory that have more toppings than a salad bar(you can only eat half they are so big)but here, with my recipe, it is much better ingredients and you get a much healthier treat.
You will need a candy thermometer (kitchen supply store) and popsicle sticks. If you have never made Carmel Apples- I really encourage to do so. Not only will it leave you and your frineds with a festive Fall treat but you will impress yourself at how easy it is. Plus, any kid will be super happy! I do not want to see you buying that crap-in-a jar that they sell over at Ralph’s that is loaded ONLY preservatives and chemicals. 🙂
I like to roll them in crispy cereal, nuts, or granola. You will also want to try my Baked Apples with Walnut Sauce. Enjoy~
Makes 6 apples
6 small, crisp apples, such as Golden Delicious, Braeburn, Honeycrisp
1 cup sugar
2 tbs unsalted butter
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
pinch of salt
1 cup topping of your choice- Cereal, Granola, Nuts, Chocolate Chips or Peanut Butter Chips, maybe dried Fruit-(all optional)
1. Line baking sheet with wax paper. Remove stems from apples, if necessary, and push Popsicle stick or chopstick in stem end of apple.
2. Combine sugar and 1/2 cup water in saucepan. Bring to a boil. Add butter, vinegar, salt, then simmer over med heat 10 to 15 mins, or until mixture reads 290 F. Alternatively boil toffee until tiny amount dripped into bowl of cold water becomes firm.
3. Place topping in bowl. Dip apples in toffee, twirling to coat bottom half. Let toffee drip off bottoms before rolling in topping. Place on prepared baking sheet, and cool. Wrap in wax paper if not eating right away.
